CESCM description

The CESCM (Centre d’études supérieures de civilisation médiévale = Center for Medieval Studies), housed in the Hôtel Berthelot, is a research center (Unité Mixte de Recherche 7302) co-financed both by the University of Poitiers and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), witch promotes pluridisciplinary research at an international level.

It was founded in 1953 in Poitiers because of the quality and the density of its medieval heritage, especially of the town itself and of its geographical region, in particulary its romane churches.

Since its fondation, the CESCM has built up a very large specialized library on all aspect of medieval studies and is closely associated with the BnF in Paris (Bibliothèque nationale de France).
